George Merkert – CEO and Writer/Producer

George Merkert has had pivotal roles in the development and management of three production companies. He is deeply experienced in making the difficult decisions required to build and manage enterprises based on creative talent.

George graduated from The Colorado College with a degree in English Literature. He then spent four years working as a cowboy, oil field roughneck and ski instructor to save money for film school. He attended The Film School Of Half Moon Bay after which he joined Colossal Pictures in San Francisco.

During his seven years with Colossal he rose to become Executive Producer and General Manager. Under George’s stewardship, Colossal grew from a tiny, unheralded company into a powerhouse TV commercial, music video animation and motion picture visual effects production company with an international reputation.

Following his tenure with Colossal Pictures George joined MetroLight Studios. At MetroLight he established the company’s production department and was the architect of the company’s cost control systems. Also while at MetroLight he produced the animated Skeleton Sequence for Total Recall which won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

During the formative years of Sony Pictures Imageworks, George held the post of Executive Producer. In this capacity he organized the company’s production department and managed all of the company’s productions. He negotiated or approved all of the company’s deals for creative visual effects and animation services. While with Imageworks George produced visual effects and animation for Starship Troopers. The budget for this work, which George managed, was over US $36 million. Starship Troopers was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1998.

George was also Executive Producer for the C.A.F.E. division of PDI (since renamed Dreamworks Animation) where he supervised the production of visual effects and animation for Forces Of Nature, Mission Impossible 2 and The Legend Of Bagger Vance.

In addition to producing visual effects and animation for many motion pictures, George has produced more than 100 TV commercials, music videos and other short films. He has also written and developed several screenplays. George’s writings on his adventures in sports competitions have been widely published on the internet.

The writers of the TV show Breaking Bad named a character after George (“ASAC Merkert”) to acknowledge his contribution to their development of the series’s protagonist character, Walter White.

George serves on the Board of Advisors for Image College of Arts Animation and Technology (ICAAT), an animation and visual effects training company headquartered in Chennai, Tamilnadu, India.

Additionally, George has given numerous talks on topics of interest to animation and visual effects professionals and students and has served as an expert witness in legal proceedings.
